Substance Abuse Interventions and Practice for the Mental Health Practitioner

Annie Kendig, LPCC, LICDC

Location: Waybridge Training Center

10945 Reed Hartman Hwy, Suite 302

Cincinnati, Ohio 45242

Through counseling, clients learn new strategies and perspectives to help them lead better and fuller lives. In this process, counselors learn how clients’ mental state affects their daily lives, and often, how clients have taken “medication” into their own hands. It is rare that mental health professionals see clients who have not developed some sort of abuse or addiction to unhealthy patterns of living. One of the most prevalent forms of this continues to be alcohol and drug abuse. This presentation is for the practitioner who does not work directly with substance abuse issues but wants to learn more about effective substance abuse intervention strategies in order to impact change for their mental health clients.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Participants will understand how stigma of the addicted populations can interfere with the therapeutic process

  • Participants will learn general knowledge of types and classifications of commonly abused substances as well as intoxication symptoms and withdrawal effects.

  • Participants will learn how to effectively diagnose clients with suspected substance abuse in order to connect them with adequate resources

  • Participants will discuss and share Motivational Interviewing techniques as well as interventions that have proven effective in dealing with addicted populations

  • Participants will apply knowledge during case study activity and understand how substance dependent clients present in session
