In order to effectively work with trans clients, professionals benefit from understanding the unique needs of this population to provide best care and implement clinically appropriate treatment strategies. This workshop will provide clinical mental health counselors with necessary tools to provide treatment for the specialized needs of trans populations in a clinical and educational setting. To facilitate this process, this workshop will challenge the participant’s understanding of certain social constructs that influence the relational experience of our world to promote greater understanding of trans and LGBTQ+ issues. Participants will learn useful assessment tools, interventions, and treatment strategies to implement in their clinical practice.

Counseling the Consensually Non-Monogamous

Alonna Donovan Makinson, LPCC-S

Location: Waybridge Training Center

10945 Reed Hartman Hwy, Suite 302

Cincinnati, Ohio 45242

Do you wish you understood more about open relationships or consensual non-monogamy (CNM) so you could better serve your clients who are involved in the polyamorous, swinging, or kink communities?  CNM clients often struggle to access mental health treatment due to perceived stigma, misinformation and misunderstanding about CNM in the healthcare system, and a lack of effective counseling interventions specific to CNM issues and concerns.  This training will help you gain the confidence you seek in order to better serve CNM populations in the therapy room.  You will learn strategies for establishing and maintaining a safe and welcoming therapeutic environment for your CNM clients, as well as practical approaches to mental health assessment and treatment of individuals, couples, and relationship configurations identifying within the CNM community.

April 17, 2020 (9:00am-12:15pm)

Substance Abuse:

Understanding the Levels of Addiction

Katherine Turfan, M.A., LPC

Location: Waybridge Training Center

10945 Reed Hartman Hwy, Suite 302

Cincinnati, Ohio 45242

March 27, 2020 (9:00am-12:15pm)

Substance use, substance abuse, and substance addiction are terms that are often used interchangeably but in the clinical context are very different ideas. Within this training the clinician will learn the difference between use, abuse, and addiction. Participants will learn to tell the difference and when to refer for further substance use assessment. Using the ASAMs Levels of Care as a standard to understand when it is appropriate to refer clients to higher or different levels of care can be a subtle and difficult feat. Using our clinical training in a different way, seeing substance use as a mental health issue rather than a separate category makes its approach seamless in its treatment with other disorders and issues. Substance use is often a co-occurring disorder and this training will help you to understand how to approach substances not with fear but with understanding and confidence .
