About the Workshop

This training offers mental health service providers (social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, students, etc.) a deeper, more nuanced approach to suicide and homicide risk assessment and safety planning. Participants will learn to apply evidence-based assessment tools with greater cultural humility and clinical sensitivity. While this training is primarily grounded in an outpatient therapeutic context, we will address some of the distinct demands of brief crisis interactions, school-based contexts, and situations involving intimate partner violence, including critical considerations around firearm safety. Special attention is given to working with marginalized populations and individuals facing socioeconomic barriers, with an honest examination of how systemic oppression and institutional failures shape risk and safety. Participants will leave with practical strategies for engaging in meaningful conversations around safety and developing safety plans that honor each client's unique strengths, values, and lived experiences.
