Couples Sensitive Individual Counseling (CSIC) addresses the unique challenges that arise when therapists work with people in individual therapy while they are concurrently involved in couples therapy. CSIC clinicians are mindful of the potential impact of the therapeutic conversations and interventions on the client’s intimate partner and the couple relationship. Well intended individual therapists can increase the potential for separation and divorce when they engage in expressing pessimism that the spouse can change without knowing that person, by regularly commenting on the spouse’s personality limitations, or even offering a diagnosis for the spouse without having done an assessment, such as saying "your husband sounds narcissistic". Couples therapists and couples alike struggle in couples therapy when individual therapists are unaware of the dangers of working with an individual client when their client is also in couples therapy.
