This workshop will teach participants several methods for assessing and intervening in crisis. First, participants will learn a 6-step model of crisis intervention that clearly outlines how to respond to the majority of crisis situations encountered by a school or clinical mental health counselor. Participants will then practice this method in the workshop.
Whether in a school or community setting, mental health professionals will need to make decisions regarding suicide ideation and intent. The presenters will discuss several strategies for suicide assessment including understanding the negative thought continuum, interviewing content and the CASE approach to suicide assessment. These will be practiced in the workshop.
The NOVA model is widely used by crisis response teams for responding to school tragedies or supporting first responders. The major tasks for postvention are to help your students, fellow faculty, families and first responders manage the understandable feelings of shock, grief and confusion.
