Models of Crisis Assessment and Intervention

This live workshop with virtual option will discuss several models of crisis intervention, including the 6-step model, the CASE Approach and specific suicide assessment and treatment considerations.

1st Hour:

The 6-Step Model

  • Learn the concept of mobility in action to help determine the clinician's course of action in crisis assessment.

  • Learn core components of compassionate response to assist in creating trust with clients.

  • Experience and practice the six steps of crisis intervention to help clients create their own plan for managing crisis.

2nd Hour

The CASE Approach to Suicide Assessment

  • Understand the concepts of the narrative approach of the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events.

  • Understand the validity techniques that help the client give a more honest appraisal of their internal experience and behavior.

  • Understand cognitive, social, family and mental health factors in suicide thought and intent.

  • Learn specific factors in suicide intent and lethality and the role of burdensome in suicide intent.

  • Learn the interventions that are appropriate at each level of risk.

  • Experience and practice the stages of the CASE Approach.

  • Learn components of a suicide intervention treatment plan.

Break 15 minutes

3rd Hour

NOVA Model of Postvention 

  • Learn how the NOVA model can be used as a post-crisis response in a classroom setting or used in individual sessions.

  • Learn crisis team response procedures.

  • Learn the NOVA Model intervention format and the stages of the process.

  • Experience and practice the NOVA model.

Suicide Specific Assessment and Treatment Planning

  • ​Lean how to use the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale.

  • Learn how to develop a suicide specific treatment plan.
